Biofuel Research Laboratory

 

      AHEC started R&D work on biodiesel production using non-edible oils in the year 2005. The work carried out so far includes:

  1. Optimization of process parameters for the maximum productivity of methyl-ester (i.e. biodiesel) using experimental as well as software approaches.

  2. Characterization:
    The characterization of biodiesel is carried out based on fuel properties, oxidation stability, viscosity as well as gas chromatographic analysis.

  3. Oxidation stability and cold flow properties (CFP) improvement:
    R&D has been carried out to improve the oxidation stability of the biodiesel in order to store the biofuel for longer period of time and to retared the degradation process leading to poor fuel quality. Similarly, the Cold Flow Property (CFP) are also improved similar to petroleum diesel. These two aspects have been taken care in the biodiesel produced from Jatropha Curcas, Pongamia Pinnanta, waste cooking oil and micro algal oil. This improvement in quality is needed to improve its fuel quality compatibility with petroleum diesel for use in diesel engines.

  4. Thermal Stability:
    Studies are carried out to determine and improve the thermal stabilities of biodiesel. Though, no limit is provided for thermal stability in any of the biodiesel specifications. The thermal stability is required to lower the rate of degradation of biofuel on account of exposer to sunlight, temperature and other toxic substances present in the biodiesel. Thermal stability provides a fair idea about the sensitivity of biofuel composition to environmental conditions for its storage and utilization as engine fuels. This also ensures the storage ability. Several metals like iron, chromium, steel brass etc. were tried to improve the quality of the biodiesel from the point of view of its storage in storage tank.

  5. Classification of Oils:
    Based on OSI, chemical composition of free fatty acid and CFP, a classification of edible, non-edible and micro algal oils is developed for the first time to help the manufacturers/ industries to select the best oils for biodiesel production. The "Best oil is meant for the quality of oil, that can be converted to biodiesel having best oxidation stability and CPF for direct use in engine and will require minimum efforts to improve its fuel quality. Likewise the poor oils are those, whose biodiesel requires enormous efforts for improvement of its quality for engine application.

  6. Performance of biodiesel fuelled IC engines:
    Engine performance has been evaluated in terms of brake thermal efficiency & brake specific fuel consumption on different engine loadings using different blends of biodiesels with diesel including B100 & pure diesel. The engine generator system responded differently with different type of biofuels. Apart from this, the emissions of CO2, HC, CO, NOX & SPM were also measured and compared with diesel and B100. In the case of higher NOx emissions using biodiesel, efforts were made to reduce the NOx using blends of biodiesel with diesels in admixture with methyl/ethyl alcohol, which are found to reduce the NOx emissions from the engine exhaust significantly.
