Summary

The department has undertaken a large number of testing and consultancy projects from the industries around. Failure analysis, materials development and identification of suitable materials for a given application are the areas where most of the consultancies were sought. A major consultancy project sponsored by BARC on “Stretched zone width measurement and Metallurgical investigations of piping components” had been initiated last year for the study of nuclear power plant pipes. Another consultancy project sponsored by BRNS on “fracture mechanics of narrow-gap welded material” is going on. There is a conscious effort to extend our facilities and expertise to the industries for technology assessment and development in order to help them face the cutting edge of competition in the present globalized environment.

Failure analysis, materials development and identification of suitable materials for a given application are the areas where most of the consultancies were sought. A major initiative has been taken to start a multi-institutional effort to develop next generation high energy density LI-ion battery for application in electric vehicle. The other institutes involved are IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, Central glass and ceramic research institute and Indian association for cultivation of science. A sponsored project in collaboration with R.R.L. Bhubaneswar has also been started in our department to develop TiC reinforced ferrous composites. Another consultancy project sponsored by BRNS on “fracture mechanics of narrow-gap welded material” is going on. There is a conscious effort to extend our facilities and expertise to the industries for technology assessment and development in order to help them face the cutting edge of competition in the present globalized environment A collaborative sponsored project, “ Development of Wear resistant TiC reinforced ferrous composites” with RRL, Bhubaneswar has been started. This project is sponsored by CSIR and of Rs.17 lakhs. TiC will be dispersed in steel and cast iron matrix. The probable end user of these products are Indian Railways.

This is a multi institutional project sponsored by ministry of Defence. Synthesis and characterization of nano structutred materials are in progress. These materials have exhibited excellent tribological properties.
