"Scientific visualisation: Visualise your data effectively and avoid common pitfalls"
Organized by: Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and University of Potsdam (Co-PREPARE Project)
The workshop entitled “Scientific visualisation: Visualise your data effectively and avoid common pitfalls” was successfully conducted online on July 1, 2022, on the 2nd anniversary of the Co-PREPARE project. The workshop was conducted by Dr Lina Stein, Hydrological Systems Group, Institute of Environmental Science and Geography, University of Potsdam, Germany, and was organized by the Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee and University of Potsdam. The main objective of this program was to train scholars to acquire research skills, tools, ideas, strategies and approaches in data visualization. The overarching goal was to visualize scientific data as an integral part of scientific understanding and communication. This workshop was designed to help students improve their data visualization skills in a way that the research outputs would be more accessible within their own scientific community and reach a wider audience.
We had received 98 applications in total and selected 30 applicants from different disciplines and departments such as Hydrology, Civil Engineering, Earthquake Engineering, Earth Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Hydro and Renewable Energy, Water Resources Development and Management and others. In total, 22 participants shown up for the workshop with 6 female and 16 male participants. The participants were research scholars in different stages of their research careers. The workshop focused on different aspects of data visualization such as chart types, orientations, sizes and colour schemes for representing data efficiently and effectively. The session also had breakout sessions for joint exercises and activities. Overall, all the participants learned and gained more insights into the data visualization practices through this workshop.
