Situated at the foothills of the enchanting lower Himalayan ranges of Shiwalik, the city of Saharanpur (Western Uttar Pradesh) is the home to another campus of IIT Roorkee, popularly known as its Saharanpur Campus. The Institute of Paper Technology was established as School of Paper Technology by the Government of India in 1964, with an aid from the Royal Swedish Government. This school was managed by a society created by the U.P. Government until its merger with the then University of Roorkee in 1978. University of Roorkee was given the status of University by Act No IX of 1948 of the United Provinces (Uttar Pradesh). The school was renamed as the Institute of Paper Technology in July 1978. The Institute of Paper Technology was renamed as Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, Saharanpur Campus. Saharanpur Campus is a well planned and developing Campus acquiring 25 acres of land with a distance of around 49 kms from the Roorkee campus.
Department of Paper Technology offers two years M. Tech. degree in Paper Technology to cater the needs of the paper and packaging industries and simultaneously impart knowledge of the allied chemical and process industries. The departmental research activities are tuned with the needs of industry. These include; Environmental management, Energy efficient process and material conservation, Optimum use of available Indian raw materials to modern pulping and bleaching processes, Secondary fiber processing, Evaluation of hydro-dynamic characteristics of pulp suspension, Evaluation of black liquor and improvements in its processing, Evaluating paper surface and printability characteristics, Development of proper controls and use of bio-technological applications, Development of value-added quality papers, Cost reduction studies and Waste minimization, Development of lignin by-products and nanotechnology. In addition to this, DPT covers research areas such as Electronics and Communication and computer science etc. under the supervision of highly motivated faculty members, who are enthusiastically working towards creating a highly competitive, academic and research environment in the department.
