About the Workshop

The Indian healthcare sector is expected to reach $280 billion USD by 2025. It is already one of the top 20 medical device markets in the world and yet, India imports over 70% of its medical devices. Currently the medical device market in India is valued at $5.2 billion USD and is projected to grow tenfold within a decade. Since 1940s, India has relied on the Drugs and Cosmetics Act to regulate the medical device industry. Most medical devices, however, were designed and developed completely by U.S. and European based companies. In 2017-2018, the Indian Medical Device Rules were enacted and further Amended in 2020 covering various aspects of device regulations, classifications, registration, manufacturing, import, and post-market requirements. Currently, India does not have a robust university level program for medical device engineering.

In view of the current need for biomedical research and teaching, IIT Roorkee takes an initiative to develop a training program in collaboration with Texas A&M University. This workshop aims to facilitate design of biomedical devices for Indian market, inspired by the current government initiative, Make in India. This workshop will be an amalgamation of Texas A&M University’s pedagogy, and, design and technology of IIT Roorkee. The objective of this workshop is to familiarize students with present research gaps in medical device design and their practical importance and ideate a competent solution.
