The glacier feeds the Bhagirathi river system and is formed by two cirques, originating at the northern slope of Draupadi-ka-Danda and Jaonli peak, 5600m and 6000m respectively. Although it was a long trek of around 80 km, still there were 18 members in the team. All the team members ,including 2 joint secretaries of HEC, gathered at Ravindra Bhawan, IITR at around 3am on 23rd November 2016 .A public bus was boarded from Roorkee bus stand for Haridwar and another for Uttarkashi. The scene from window of bus was really beautiful; bluish colored water of Bhagirathi and beautiful peaks presented amazing natural beauty. At around 2pm on 23rd, the group reached Uttarkashi where the guide and the travelling agent received them. From there, everyone travelled to Maneri where the scrumptious lunch was served. At around 4pm, everyone started trekking towards the base camp - Bhukki village, situated in the middle of a peak. A bone fire was made and everybody enjoyed. Meantime, the cook made dinner. After having their meals, everyone slipped into their sleeping bags. On 24th morning, the group started trekking at 7:30am. After trekking through narrow ridges beside rocks for almost 2 hours, everyone reached Tela village. There after a brief rest, the group climbed numerous peaks, passed through several narrow rivers and encountered some of the most beautiful views. Trekking for almost 12 hours ,bought everyone to a place named Gujjar Hut where the tents were pitched. Next morning, the group started off for the base camp and also visited Khera Tal in the way. Khera Tal is famous for Khera nag. It is believed that in ancient times, the water of Khera Tal used to be poisonous. Everyone was at the base camp by 1 pm and after pitching the tents, all took meal and enjoyed. The glacier was clearly visible from there. The next morning, the group headed towards the final destination. The path was tricky and tough and therefore out of 18, only 10 decided to make a move towards the final destination i.e. Advance base camp of Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. The ice was hard and demanded caution. The sunlight reflected by the glacier was intense. The sky was clear dotted by some clouds. Even some clouds were floating below the peak. DKD peak range was covered with snow and looked fantastic. The view was like hypnotising. All got busy in posing with tricolour and clicking selfies. After staying there for almost 2 hours, everyone descended to the base camp. The trek took will power, courage, team work and lots of energy but all had an unforgettable experience.
