NIM is rated as one of the best mountaineering institutes in India and also considered as the most prestigious mountaineering institute in Asia. One of the largest man-made lakes in India, Tehri Lake is situated at an altitude of 1750 mts above the sea level. Tehri Lake derives its name from the town of old tehri which lies in ruins inside this like.The lake is set at the confluence of the rivers of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana. Tehri Lake is a result of three decades of construction of the Tehri Dam which holds the water of Bhagirathi converting it into the lake of this magnitude.

A trip to Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi was organised by HEC, IIT Roorkee on 19th - 20th August 2017. A total of 56 students including 32 boys and 14 girls accompanied by Prof. A S Maurya accompanied the trip. We left from Roorkee at 3:00 AM on 19th August. Breakfast was taken near Chamba at 8:30 AM. After reaching Uttarkashi at 1:00 PM, lunch and accommodation were arranged in a hotel. In afternoon the NIM campus was explored and a brief introduction was given by NIM personnels followed by training about various mountaineering equipments. In evening time a visit was planned to the riverside area. Dinner was taken at 8:00 PM in Uttarkashi itself and an overnight stay was arranged there too. We left for Tehri Water Sports at 4:00 AM on 20th August, breakfast was taken in Chamba. All the water activities were done in Tehri lake from 12:00 PM - 5:00 PM. Lunch was arranged along lakeside. Motor Boating, Jet Skiing, Banana Ride were enjoyed by the participants. We left for Roorkee at 5:00 PM. We reached Roorkee by 10:00 PM. Dinner was arranged in Roorkee itself.
