#Idea

On the occasion of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction and aligning with the activities of the 175th year celebration of the Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, the Centre of Excellence in Disaster Mitigation and Management (CoEDMM) and South Asia Alliance of Disaster Risk Institutes (SAADRI) jointly organizes a program on “Disaster Management Action Frontiers”.

Program

This event encompasses training of students, researchers, early-career scientists, and stakeholders on all the four pillars of disaster management i.e., preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation stages by showcasing actual events of disasters in the field/in-situ i.e., Uttarakhand Himalayas.

Participants

A maximum of 20 participants from SAADRI countries. Mostly of PhD students, early-career scientists, and stakeholders. Shortlisting criteria will be decided in consultation with the Faculties of CoEDMM. Major criteria will be based on relevant research interest, experience and ability to work on field campaigns.

PROGRAM

The event starts on 10th October 2022. It is scheduled for 4 days including 1 day on program introduction and basic training, 2 days of a field expedition in Uttarakhand, and 1 day on valedictory. The tentative schedule and list of events are as follows.

  • Inaugural address by the Director of IIT Roorkee

Dr. Arijit Roy

Head, Disaster Management Support Program, Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (ISRO-IIRS), Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India.

Participants will experience advanced facilities of IITR from diverse departments holistically working in Disaster Management including new age solutions (Nature-based etc).

List of the selected departments are as follows:

  1. CoEDMM: Witnessing operation of EEW (Earthquake Early Warning) system, shake table tests, flume tests and triaxial testing for landslide studies
  2. H.B. Medlicott Museum, Department of Earth Sciences
  3. Architecture

Visit to the Aglar river catchment

  • Travelling and witnessing the insitu hydro-meteorological monitoring in Aglar river catchment.
  • Visiting AWS stations and understanding hydro-meteorological observations and performing flow calculations along streams.
  • Community interactions about the environment and disasters.

Leaving Aglar to Tehri at 3:00 pm

A team is discussing the hour-to-hour plans for the field expeditions.

Visit to the Tehri Lake

  • Insitu observation and understanding of different types of landslides in and around Tehri.
  • Understanding dynamics of sedimentation due to extreme events (disasters), their effect on hydro-power projects, and their mitigation practices.

Leaving Tehri to Roorkee at 3:00 pm

A team is discussing the hour-to-hour plans for the field expeditions.

3rd Jai Krishna Memorial Lecture

3 rd Jai Krishna Memorial Lecture will be delivered by Dr. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department, Government of India

Group Activities

  • All participant groups will submit reports based on the assignments given to them.
  • Receive feedback about the event and how to improvise it further

Valedictory: Address by Secretary SAADRI.
