IIT Roorkee (erstwhile University of Roorkee) is celebrating 175 years (1847-2022) of imparting technical education and contribution in the development of the society. The celebrations started from November 25, 2021 and will continue till November 24, 2022. Different academic, cultural, sports, outreach activities are being planned by students, faculty, staff and alumni during the year of celebrations.

Mahatma Gandhi Central Library (MGCL) is one of the oldest academic libraries in the country. It came into existence in the very beginning of the establishment of the Institute (i.e. 1847). It started as a small college library with a collection of few hundred books to meet the needs of about 34 students and 6 teachers. Its collection was considerably augmented by the amalgamation of the Ganges Canal Library in 1856; and, the college library was renamed as the Central Library. In 1862, its collection got further enriched by adding the collection of the Addiscombe College Library of East India Company. Today, MGCL is housed in a modern centrally airconditioned building equipped with all the latest ICT facilities. It is spread over four floors with a carpet area of 80,000 sq. ft.

The seminar aims at bringing together the academia and industry involved in the field of library services. It is envisaged to gain insights from the experienced library professionals, academicians and professionals from the publishing industry. The seminar will focus on the new dimensions of library services. It will emphasize on learning from the experiences i.e. instead of focusing on ‘what and how can be done?’ the focus will be on ‘what was done and how?’

The seminar will consist of invited talks by eminent library professionals, academicians and experts from the publishing industry. It will also have a panel discussion on the topics covered in the seminar. Exhibition stalls of scholarly publishers, society publishers and companies providing library services will also be arranged. The seminar will help the participating library professionals in planning and providing new and innovative library services
