It started as a small college library with a collection of few hundred books to meet the needs of about 34 students and 6 teachers. Its collection was considerably augmented by the amalgamation of the Ganges Canal Library in 1856; and, the college library was renamed as the Central Library. In 1862, its collection got further enriched by adding the collection of the Addiscombe College Library of East India Company. Today, MGCL is housed in a modern centrally airconditioned building equipped with all the latest ICT facilities. It is spread over four floors with a carpet area of 80,000 sq. ft.
