Water for Welfare: Leveraging Uttarakhand's Hydropower Potential

The Government of Uttarakhand, since its inception, has taken several initiatives for the development of the State. One of the most significant is "Water for Welfare"—a Virtual Centre of Excellence operating as a Federation of various state and central institutions.

Our Institutional Journey

Dec 2003

Initial efforts for institutionalizing the initiative were taken up by the then Chief Secretary, Dr. R.S. Tolia.

August 2004

The concept of the Federation was suggested, and the Government of Uttarakhand issued the formal establishment order.

March 2005

The Centre was officially renamed as the "Virtual Centre of Excellence" through an additional Office Order.

A strategic roadmap to leverage hydropower potential and institutional expertise in Uttarakhand.

Manpower Development

Addressing basic manpower issues to produce quality engineers, designers, environmentalists, and social scientists specialized in hydropower.

Institutional Dialogue

Establishing a constant process of dialogue among power entities, projects, and academic institutions like Universities and ITIs.

Design Excellence

Concentrating on the design area to develop inherent strength and internalize local talent within the State.

Syllabus Revision

Facilitating the revision of syllabus in the State's Technical institutions to meet international accrediting standards.

Technical Training

Organizing training programmes for students, staff, and State Government Engineers for immediate capability upgradation.

Networking

Setting up robust networking facilities among all institutions and handling any other related developmental aspects.
