Inaugurated in 1956 by Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru, the swimming pool at IIT Roorkee is a centre for students and staff to learn and excel in swimming and water polo. The swimming pool is located at the Institute Sports Council, very close to the magnificent James Thomason Building.

Freshers’ Aquatics Meet- Held every year during mid August to find swimmers among freshers from UG, PG and PhDs
Annual Aquatics Meet- Held in the month of September, opens for students from all years of UG, PG and PhDs.
Aqua Hunt- Finding swimmers among the women of IITR, Aqua Hunt is conducted in the month of August.
Water Polo @IITR
Water polo is a competitive water sport between two teams of 7 players each - 6 field players and 1 goalkeeper. It is typically played in an all-deep pool so that players cannot touch the bottom. The game consists of four quarters in which the two teams attempt to score goals by throwing the ball into the opposing team's goal. The team with the most goals at the end of the game wins the match.
Inter IIT Sports Meet @IITR
IIT Roorkee has hosted Inter IIT Aquatics meet in 2005 and 2012. IITR participates in every Inter IIT Sports and Aquatics Meet and has created prominence in the Aquatics Meet under the guidance and mentorship of Coach Durga Thapa Sir.

Teamsize: 2 students can participate from each IIT in an individual event and a student can participate in maximum 3 individual events. Group events include relay for men and women and water polo for men. IITR Aquatics Men’s team bagged a Second position in Inter IIT Aquatics Meet 2019 and placed 4th in Water Polo. KS Suraaj was awarded the best swimmer of the Inter IIT Aquatics Meet ‘19 held in IIT Kharagpur. He set new tournament records in 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly stroke.
Benefits Students being active and participating in sports activities not only experience fitness benefits but also get an edge in placements. From Aquatics IITR, KS Suraaj was given the Best Sportsman Award and Ayush Dewangan was facilitated with the Rohit Guruwara Award in 2019.
