CENTRE FOR PHOTONICS AND QUANTUM COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY ROORKEE
HOD’s Corner
Message from HODs of Centre for Photonics and Quantum Communication Technology
Photonics is the backbone of telecommunication. Long-distance high-speed transfer of data, be it text, picture, voice, or video, requires communication through optical waves. Today, optical fiber communication connects billions of people across the oceans. Free-space optical communication and Li-Fi are also paving their way steadily in connecting people together. Advancements in the ongoing 2nd revolution of quantum technology have necessitated securing our telecommunication network. Quantum Communication Technology in conjunction with Photonics Technology is the route to a high-capacity secure telecommunication network. The ongoing and futuristic developments in this direction require dedicated efforts in research, and development in the area of Photonics and Quantum Communication Technology. We expect tremendous growth in this field in near future, which would require the creation of skilled manpower in this area.A multi-disciplinary approach by bringing together the expertise from Physics, Electronics, and Computer Science is required to fulfill these objectives. I am happy to share that the faculty from different disciplines at IIT Roorkee recognized the need for such efforts and have enthusiastically come forward to collaborate, which resulted in the creation of this Center. In the nascent stage of the Center, we are bringing together the existing expertise and looking forward to developing research infrastructure and manpower in this area. We will soon be offering elective courses to the students of existing programs of IIT Roorkee and will be offering a dedicated master’s program in this field in near future. We wish to emerge as an important Center for research and learning in the important area of Photonics and Quantum Communication. We invite industry, government labs, and funding agencies to partner with us in carrying out research and in developing technology in this area of national importance. We are expecting and will promote startups for developing various solutions in the form of simulation tools, components, and devices in this niche area. Let us work together to create a bright and secure future with Photonics and Quantum Communication Technology.
