Roorkee is about 180 km to the north of Delhi on the Delhi-Hardwar and Dehra Dun National Highway (NH 58). It is well connected by road and rail to many important towns such as New Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. Roorkee is located near several tourist places like Hardwar (32 km), Rishikesh (52 km), Dehradun (70 km) and Mussoorie (100 km). The Institute campus is 2.5 km from the Roorkee Railway Station and is only 200m from the Roorkee Roadways Bus Station. Apart from the IIT, which is situated in a 150-hectare campus, Roorkee town is an important centre of engineering activity. These include the Central Building Research Institute, the National Institute of Hydrology, the Irrigation Research Institute, the Irrigation Design Organisation, the headquarters of Bengal Engineering Group & Centre along with an important Army base.
