Development of Air-Cooled Based Vegetable Vending Cart
Perishable vegetables need low temperature and high relative humidity for longer storage, especially during summer months. Therefore, there is a need to design and develop a mobile vending cart that has a low power consuming cooling component and high relative humidity as well as a moisture control mechanism or self-operated panel with a display. Among various methods, evaporative cooling is an environmentally friendly air-cooling system where water and air are the working fluids, hence used in this cart. The unit is inexpensive, energy efficient and environmentally friendly.

Demand Driven Technology- Traditionally vegetable hawkers use an open pushcart to carry fruits and vegetables from wholesale market to residential colonies or rural market to sale them. Vegetables are exposed and sold during the daytime when the temperature is high most of the time which leads to rapid deterioration in the quality of vegetables and fruits. It is estimated that the rate of spoilage of vegetables alone increases 2–3 fold with each 10°C rise in temperature. Due to this routine of daily movement for sale, the hawkers are unable to maintain appropriate quality of vegetables for more than two days in summer. Thus, most of the perishable unsold for two days old vegetables are disposed of at throw away price or discarded as waste incurring heavy loss to vendors. So, an attempt has been made to develop an air cooled based mobile preservation unit for preserving the vegetables.

Field testing of Air-Cooled Based Vegetable Vending Cart
The temperature and humidity have been measured throughout the day to check the performance of the design vending cart. Cooling unit reduces the temperature upto 10-15 °C and is capable to maintain the humidity of 85% for preserving the vegetables for 2-3 days. It will also be helpful to prevent the vegetables from perishing and enhance the daily income of the street vendors.
