Variable Speed Solar Based Bageshwari Wool Charkha
Variable Speed Solar Based Bageshwari Wool Charkha
Foot operated traditional charkha is used for spinning wool in Uttarakhand, Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh. The traditional charka has a few drawbacks of non-uniform filling of bobbin; non-uniform thickness thread of yarn and low productivity. It requires strenuous efforts and physical work to run the charka. In order to overcome these issues, a modified Bageshwari Wool Charkha is developed by upgrading the traditional charkha.
Salient Feature of the Variable Speed Solar Based Bageshwari Wool Charkha
Operated manually as well as electrically and charged by solar energy.
Portable and light weight structure.
Only 110-Watt power is required for operation and speed can vary 1000- 3000 rpm
Different qualities of yarn produced by the modified charkha.
Variable speed controller and USB socket introduced in this version.
Dissemination Potential- Enhance the local livelihood of artesian and spinner communities especially in hill states and useful for textile industry.
Tentative Cost of the Unit– Rs. 35,000 /-

Demand Driven Technology- Traditionally, Bageshwari Charkha is being used to spin wool in hilly states. However, this manually operated charkhas faces the problem of low productivity, non-uniform filling of bobbin, non-uniform thickness of yarn. In order to eliminate these limitations of traditional charkha, an attempt has been made to modify with introducing foot operated electrically motor, speed controller, modified flyer and a cark for lateral motion of bobbin and light weight steel pipe instead of wooden frame.

Major Drawback of the Traditional Bageshwari wool charkha
Manually operated and low productivity
Hand spinning of wool is laborious and time consuming
Non-uniform filling of bobbin
Non-uniform thickness of yarn
Impact of Improved Technology
Local wool-Tibetan Marino, and Tibetan-56 can be spun
Efficient for the production of yarn of local wool
Local livelihood will be improved as spinning wool is highly remunerative
Feedback from the users
Yarn produced by the solar based bageshwari wool charkha is stronger compared to the manually operated charkha. The yarn produced by this charkha is more uniform and the quality of the yarn is much better and smoother than the yarn produced by the traditional charkha.
Field Training on Variable Speed Motorized Bageshwari Wool Charkha
Field training on “Variable Speed Solar based Bageshwari Wool Charkha” was provided to the artesian of Jaipur Rugs Pvt. Ltd Bikaner Rajasthan.
A training program on Bageshwari Wool Charkha for SHG Groups Swami svayam sahaayata samooh and Mahi Svayam Sahaayta Samooh (Sikandarpur Maval) Uttarakhand, was held at laboratory of HRED, IIT Roorkee.
