The breadth of competencies required to be a successful engineer is probably wider than for any other profession. A good engineer, apart from having a solid technical foundation, should have sufficient exposure to the contemporary state-of-art technologies. Society of Automotive Engineers IIT Roorkee student chapter has been established as a resource for the same.
It provides a platform to the students to share and increase their 'engineering' know-how through increased interaction between students at all levels, group discussions, brain-storming sessions, projects etc. The society has organized many industrial visits and technical lectures in the past. The activities have been designed so as to groom the overall personality of the members, so that they evolve not only technically, but as true professionals.
The advice and suggestions behind these activities are drawn directly from the accumulated experience of our faculty, feedback from the students and industrial inputs. The principal focus of these activities is to promote interactions at three basic levels: 1. Student Student Interaction 2. Institute Industry Interaction 3. Chapter Chapter Interaction

Radio Controlled Nitro car
Radio-Controlled (RC) Cars are battery/fuel powered miniature ATV (all-terrain vehicle) cars that can be controlled from a distant radio controller. Every year, a team of dedicated members are selected for building up their very own RC Nitro car. This project specifically focuses on designing and fabrication of a Nitro-fuel powered IC-Engine Car (not to be confused with electric cars). Major aspects of project work includes working on Engine, Chassis, Drivetrain, Suspension, Body-Balance, Runtime and Upkeep of the car. The product takes part in Powerdrift, a center-stage event at IIT-R technical fest – Cognizance and there’s no end to its competitive nature!
Hovercraft
Hovercraft is an air cushion vehicle having the capability to run over land, water, ice or any muddy surface used by the military in disastrous situations. An air cushion is created below the hull for lifting the vehicle. This cushion of air is contained by an flexible airtight skirt. This project aims to design and fabricate a small scale RC hovercraft that can run over land and water.

Flying Wing (RC Plane)
This is a different class of aircraft, consisting of wings only. Designed in pusher configuration, with no rudder or elevator, its ailerons are enough to provide any moment it needs. The cockpit is merged with the thickness of the wing at the centre.
Twin Boom Pusher (RC Plane)
This project encompasses the manufacturing of an amateur level radio-controlled plane with a pusher configuration. Unlike the conventional design, in pusher configuration, the propeller is mounted behind the engine, so as to push the plane forward. Aside from the fabrication, learning the fundamentals of flight will also be an integral part of the project.

Motorized Wheelchair Project
SAE IIT Roorkee successfully designed and fabricated a Motorized Wheel Chair in the year 2011 which suits the requirements of a student. It includes various innovations in design and special features designed for the comfort of the handicapped person. Some of them are as listed below.
Innovations: 1. Wireless Remote Control: The wheelchair is controlled by wireless remote controller. 2. Caster Wheel Suspension: Perfectly engineered suspensions in rear caster wheels. 3. Adjustable Height with the help of a jack mounted below the seat. This feature is required for a student in classrooms and labs. 4. Foldability and portability: The motors and batteries can be detached and the wheelchair can be folded and packed in a casing for transportation.
Effi Cycle
Efficycle is an intercollegiate design competition for undergraduate and graduate students where teams have to design and fabricate an energy efficient entirely human powered three-wheeled vehicle. The vehicle must be aerodynamic, highly engineered and ergonomically designed. The design should be commercially viable as a product and should be attractive to the consumers because of its visual appearance, performance, reliability and ease of operation.
Mechanical Design: Upon carrying out literature survey, two general kinds of Human Powered Vehicles have been found existing. These two designs are: 1. Delta Design – In Delta design, there are two wheels on rear side and one wheel on front side. 2. Tadpole Design – In Tadpole design, there are two front wheels and one rear wheel. Both the designs have their own advantages and depending on the requirements, one may select any of them. We considered following factors before finalizing on Tadpole design: 1)Weight Distribution 2)Center of Mass 3)Braking
Achievements: In 2010,IIT Roorkee team "SeiGeR" stood overall 6th position in this event organized by UIET in Chandigarh from 23rd–24th Oct . SeiGeR IITR bags 1st prize in “Utility & Maneuverability Event”. In 2011,team "Seiger" gave a fabulous performance and stood overall 4th position in this event and also bags 2nd prize in "Acceleration".

Brakes: 1. Front Brakes – We decided to go for the disc brakes in both the front wheels as Disc brakes can be mounted on the hub of the wheels. 2. Rear Brakes – A reliable braking system for the rear wheel, V-Brakes because of its higher mechanical advantage and because of stable positioning of brakes in rear fork. 3. Drive Train – The drive train consists of an innovative transmission system which was invented by Alberto Domenge in 1992. This system allows the captain and stoker to peddle independently of each other.
Steering: When a vehicle travels round a bend, the inside wheel must follow a tighter curve than the outside wheel. To achieve this, the geometry of the steering must be arranged to turn the inside wheel through a larger angle than the outside wheel. The 'Ackerman' steering geometry provides a simple solution to this problem. Modified Ackerman Steering System has been designed for our HPV so as to allow the inner wheel to turn through a smaller radius as compared to outside wheel.
