MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Water Resources Development and Management (formerly Water Resources Development Training Centre) of IIT Roorkee during the last six decades has achieved a high level of performance in training the young water professionals with the proper blend of theory and practice. This Department has earned a reputation and fame globally by imparting knowledge and education to many scientistsand professionals, especially from Asia, Africa, and other developing countries. Alumni of the Department are found world wide who have performed with excellence while serving society at large.
The Department offers three Post-Graduate programs,i.e.,Water Resources Development (WRD) (for Civil/Electrical/Mechanical Engineers),Irrigation Water Management (IWM) (for Civil/Agricultural Engineers/Agricultural Scientists), and Drinking Water and Sanitation (for Civil/Environmental/Mechanical/Agricultural/Chemical Engineers/B.Arch and Planning or equivalent). These programs' duration is 24 months, including lectures, practicals, educational tours, project reports, and dissertations. These Master of Technology (M. Tech) programs are unique to provide knowledge in fields through credit-based courses works. Furthermore, there are three diploma programs of 12 months duration covering the same course work as the Post Graduate programs excluding the dissertation. The programs are updated continuously, and the latest subjects such as Remote Sensing, GIS,On-farm Water Management,Climate Change impacts, etc., are in corporate to add great contemporary value.
The Department's faculties are outstanding in their respective fields of specialization with diversified experience in planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of multi purpose water resources projects.Theydo extensive research to advancethe existing knowledge. Teaching in the Department has a unique blend of both practical and theoretical concepts. The Department has been very actively involved in research, consultancy, and extension nactivities. It is also known as a center of excellence in the Design of Water Resources Structure, Irrigation Planning and Management, Flood Control, Irrigation and Drainage,Hydropower Development,Drinking Water,and Sanitation, including Technological &Governance issues.The Department helps society by sharing agro-climatic information with the farmers in the regions.
I believe these courses offered by the Department of WRD&M will help to develop trained human resources and conduct research in the vital subject areas to cater to the needs of the Afro-Asian Countries, including India, which would promote sustainable development goals of the society.
