About the event
Indo-German School on the "The Second Law in Earth System Science" is organized by Department of Hydrology, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in collaboration with the Max-Planck-Institute for Biogeochemistry, Jena Germany during 03rd - 07th March 2025.
This 5 day workshop explores the Second Law of Thermodynamics within Earth System Science focusing on understanding thermodynamic principles and their applications in climate, hydrology, and renewable energy. Through lectures, hands-on sessions, and discussions, participants will gain insights into how these principles shape Earth's systems and learn to apply them to address environmental challenges. The workshop is designed for researchers and practitioners seeking to deepen their understanding of thermodynamics and its crucial role in Earth system science.

Objectives and expected outcomes
The objectives of the workshop are:
- Understanding how the Second Law of Thermodynamics shapes Earth system processes in components like climate, hydrology, climate change, and renewable energy.
- Provide hands-on experience enabling participants to apply the constraints imposed by second law in addition to the conservation laws to estimate surface temperatures, turbulent fluxes, hydrological variables like evaporation, and their sensitivities to climate change.
- Encourage interdisciplinary collaboration and foster an exchange of knowledge and ideas among participants, promoting a holistic approach to Earth system science.
