About

About the event

The planned training program "STAC-X 2022" from May 9 to May 20, 2022, focuses on Emerging Space Technology Applications for Compound EXtremes. It aims at the emerging space technology and its applications to identify, monitor and create awareness on compound extremes. The overarching goal is to provide a holistic understanding of available space datasets utilization of traditional and contemporary algorithms to solve the real-world challenges of compound extremes.

We promote the optimum utilization of space technology, open-source algorithms, and software at the summer school and provide recommendations to enhance regional efforts towards disaster management and emergency response. We will also try to understand the historic perspective from the experts and how they see the future scenarios. The summer school will be a platform where we will hear opinions from all the domains involved in space technology and compound extremes, i.e. academicians, practitioners, scientists, policymakers and the younger generation entering this field. These discussions will provide guidelines for future research in applying space products on compound extremes.

The school is designed to provide theoretical and hands-on training to all the participants. The intention is to create an understanding of various space products available for earth science applications, evaluation and corrections, and application of these products on compound extremes using various software, models, and algorithms. Developing new skills for early career researchers through hands-on training will bring a fresh perspective in the research domain, advancing science communication.

Agenda

Agenda

STAC-X 2022 Training program on "Emerging Space Technology Applications for Compound Extremes 2022“ on 9th - 20th May 2022

The entire two-week course of the summer school "STAC-X 2022 "has been split into various components, including lectures, hands-on sessions, minor-project and team building events. The course has been planned for each day, 6 hours split into two sessions, morning and afternoon, each of 3-hours.

  • (i) Understanding of various satellite products, evaluation, corrections and utilization
  • (ii) Application of these products on extremes using various software, models and algorithms
  • (iii) Geo-portals for spatio-temporal satellite data/products availability from multi-mission, various digital elevation models, precipitation products, temperature products, GRACE data, satellite altimetry data, NDVI, LAI, NPP, etc.
  • (iv) Softwares such as Google Earth Engine (GEE), QGIS, R-Studio, Python, Flood Models
  • (v) Algorithms such as Evaluation of SPPs, Merging of SPPs using bayesian model averaging, Vertical accuracy of DEMs

The school also offers field visits and minor project exercises.

The detailed agenda shall be updated soon.

Why attend STAC-X 2022?

Globally extreme precipitation, droughts and floods remain among the most common natural hazards having significant detrimental impacts on human welfare and economic prosperity. Such extreme events arise from the complex and cascading interactions between various physical processes across multiple spatial and temporal scales. To investigate such emerging compound extremes, space technology offers a better solution as a number of satellite products (precipitation, temperature, soil moisture) are easily accessible online free of cost. Despite so, the utility of such products and awareness among scientists, practitioners and different stakeholders is in infancy. Also, risks arising from extreme events navigate across multiple disciplines and go beyond the expertise of a single research group or research institute. Interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts enhance scientific discovery, which is limited despite the clear benefits.

Department of Hydrology is organizing the first Roorkee Summer School on Goesciencse focusing on Emerging Space Technology Applications for Compound Extremes (STAC-X 2022) from May 07 to May 20, 2022, as part of its knowledge-sharing agenda funded by the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Government of India. We have distinguished experts to share their knowledge with a broader audience and discuss strengthening scientific discovery and collaborative research. STAC-X 2022 is planned to draw attention to the multidisciplinary aspect of the remote sensing and compound extremes domain.
