The Department of Earthquake Engineering at IIT Roorkee holds seminars once in two weeks under the PRIME Lecture Series (Promoting Research and Industry Excellence Lecture Series) series. The seminars aim to stimulate conversation between students, industry practitioners, and academicians and bring together top researchers from academia and industry to exchange scientific ideas and information in the interdisciplinary areas of Earthquake, Civil, Construction, and Built-environment Engineering. These seminars support the efforts made and continue to push the boundaries to promote the scientific exchange of ideas and collaboration and help in fostering further academic and industrial collaboration. Besides, this seminar series provides students with the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics from diverse perspectives and complements the initiative of the Department to promote the overall development of our students.
The Department of Earthquake Engineering, formerly known as School for Research and Training in Earthquake Engineering (SRTEE) was established at University of Roorkee (Now Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee) in 1960, which has now completed 60 years of excellence in the service of nation. This department happens to be the only one of its kind in the country till date that deals with earthquake engineering problems and challenges. It is fully interdisciplinary since its existence, bringing together structural and soil engineers, geologist and seismologist working as a team under one roof. The Department is engaged in teaching at Post Graduate level and conducting basic and applied research proceeding upto Ph.D. programmes along with developing Indian Standards and also training of field engineers in various aspects of earthquake engineering. Moreover, the Department of Earthquake Engineering is actively involved in carrying out sponsored research and consultancy projects through self-guiding state-of-art test facilities having capability to convert research on paper into technology for field implementation.
