Craft (Tourism) Village Development 01 Nov 2025 Tourism, Craft Village, Heritage, Local Area Planning, Design Development, Infrastructure Planning The ‘Craft Village Gap Analysis and Development of a Replicable Model’ project has been undertaken by the Department of Design, Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee, under the Research and Development Component of the National Handicrafts Development Programme (NHDP). The key focus areas of this research are – (i) Leveraging Craft Villages as Knowledge Centers, (ii) Developing impact indicators for economy and tourism; and (iii) Preparing standardised interventions and design templates for a Model Craft Village. The research adopts an interdisciplinary, and a community-oriented methodology structured across three phases. Phase I involves reconnaissance and pre-feasibility studies, including global and national case studies of craft village models, policies, and best practices. Phase II comprises of detailed field-based investigations. Phase III focuses on participatory validation through stakeholder workshops and expert consultations to refine design matrices, policy recommendations, and implementation guidelines. The project outcomes include – the development of a replicable Craft Village Development Model supported by standardised design templates, assessment matrices, Craft Knowledge Centre (CKC) models, institutional and operational frameworks, PPP model for interventions, and financial strategies. These outputs provide an implementation-ready roadmap to strengthen existing craft villages and guide future initiatives. 22 Lakhs Ministry of Textiles, India Prof. Vinay Sharma (Co-PI)

Craft Incubation Project: Ringal, Uttarakhand 01 Apr 2024 Product Diversification, Marketing, Design Development, Crafts, Training, Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Livelihood The Department of Design, IIT Roorkee, in collaboration with IGNCA, is reimagining Ringaal, Uttarakhand’s traditional bamboo weaving craft, by blending heritage with modern design innovation. Once limited to baskets and storage, Ringaal is now being transformed into wall panels, furniture, partitions, and lifestyle products, making it relevant for contemporary interiors and sustainable living. This initiative not only preserves craftsmanship but also empowers artisans by creating new market opportunities. Through material experimentation and modern applications, we aim to establish Ringaal as a versatile design material, bringing Uttarakhand’s rich craft heritage into the mainstream. 12 Lakhs ABCD, IGNCA, Ministry of Culture, India
Design and Development of Creatives for Promoting Tourism 01 May 2023 Tourism, G20, Internationalisation, Branding, Identity Design, Graphic Design The project is commissioned by the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board (UTDB), Ministry of Tourism, Uttarakhand (India). To enhance the visual appeal and create a unique identity for Uttarakhand as a premier tourist destination, UTDB has partnered with IIT Roorkee, which is an Institute of National and International repute, to provide tourism development related services under its CSR program named "Revitalizing Tourism in Uttarakhand through Unique and Culturally Rich Designs". As part of this partnership, one of the assignments was to develop G20 Creatives for the events hosted under the G20 Presidency of India, during May to December 2023. In fact, these creatives have imparted a unique visual identity to the Himalayan State, and are being showcased in varied other capacities, on social media as well as in print media. The major objectives of celebrating the regional context and creating a visual identity for the State, at an international platform, which could also be integrated within the eco-system of Uttarakhand Tourism, are achieved through this rigorous process and passionate endeavour. Since the creatives had to be shown during the G20 events, a lot of care and attention was given to accuracy; right depiction of the State’s identity; public sentiment; selection of colours; stylisation without losing meaning; universal design vocabulary that stood out to the global masses; and getting clearance from the Ministries of Tourism and External Affairs. This project is an exemplary illustration of bringing diverse stakeholders together; establishing Government-Academia-Profession partnerships; telling immersive stories through transdisciplinary overlaps and narrative design; and creating a visual identity for a State and Nation. Similar methods and tools could be applied for professional assignments of national and global importance. 14 Lakhs Ministry of Tourism, India

Understanding the Importance of Art in Interior-Architecture 01 Apr 2013 Understanding the Importance of Art in Interior-Architecture This research is based on the work done at School of Interior Design, CEPT University and Development and Research Organization for Nature, Art and Heritage (DRONAH).This research attempts to study the significance and role of art work in Interior-Architecture, with specific reference to City Palace, Udaipur. The palace is very famous for the use of glass, mirror; various paintings; surface finishes and mosaic work. Significant amount of thematic art work (paintings) can also be seen in many other parts of this palace. The use of such art and craft in Mewar was observed from around the late 18th century through Mughal and European influence. The most prominent example of this is the Sheesh Mahal, or Palace of Mirrors, in the City Palace, Udaipur. As an outcome of this research, a monograph is published, which can be used as a pedagogical tool for the students and teachers of architecture. It can also be used by designers, artisans, craftspersons and professionals as well. 0.2 Lacs QIP, IIT Roorkee [0.2 Lacs]
