About Us
The Department of Architecture and Planning imparts high-quality education in the professional fields of Architecture and Planning and offers Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch.), Master of Architecture (M. Arch.), Master of Urban and Rural Planning (MURP) and Ph.D. programs. The B. Arch. was started in 1956. The department has the singular distinction of being the first in India in instituting a Masters Degree program M. Arch. in the year 1969-70 and later another one, MURP in 1973-74. The Department has facilities like Climatology Lab, Computer Lab, and Computerized Design Studios equipped with state-of-art equipment and software, an Art Lab and a Fabrication Lab. A prestigious lab on Net Zero Emissions, set up under the INDO-UK program, is the latest addition in the department.
Alongside, six new labs have been set up in the Department namely Virtual Reality Lab, SPARSH (Spatial Planning research), Urban Dynamics Lab, Civic Design Lab, Industrial Design Lab, Laboratory of Inclusive Design (LID), and Infrastructure Planning Lab to conduct high-end research in various spectrum of architecture and planning. The Institute takes very special care in selecting students for admission to various academic programs with the objective of providing technical education only to the best ones.

A.P Kanvinde Lecture Series - Ar. Vivek Singh Rathore
Ar. Vivek Singh Rathore distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee (2000), he is the visionary founder of SALIENT, a top multidisciplinary design studio in India for sustainable architecture. With 25 years of experience, he has led over 100 projects and designed more than 20 million sq. ft. across residential, mixed-use, and public spaces. Notable works include Kolkata’s largest affordable housing project, Eastern India’s first biophilic high-rise (Biowonder), and several landmark green buildings. A recipient of over 200 national and international design awards, including the IIA Awards, World Architecture Festival, CWAB- Top 10 Architecture Firm, Global Cityscape Design Award and IGBC Fellowship (2024), he is deeply committed to culturally rooted, environmentally responsive design. As Co-chairman of IGBC (Eastern Region), he advocates for a Net Zero India by 2070 and actively engages in public speaking, lectures, and mentoring. His philosophy—“Creation is nothing but a modification of our relationships”—continues to inspire his mission to make India a global leader.

IIT Roorkee is delighted to announce the signing of a five-year, Institute-wide Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), between IIT Roorkee and RWTH Aachen University, Germany. We proudly recognize Prof. (Dr.) Smriti Saraswat from the Department of Architecture and Planning, IIT Roorkee, as the champion for this MoU, who has a longstanding association with the RWTH Aachen University, and has been coordinating with Prof. Axel Sowa (Chair, Architectural Theory, RWTH Aachen University) and Dr. Fabian Falter (International Office, RWTH Aachen University), for materialising this MoU.
