Overview of the Course and its Objective: The program aims to provide an engaging environment to foster creativity and skills through an interdisciplinary process of teaching and training. The teaching-learning pedagogy is designed to train and develop professionals who can creatively challenge the existing design of products/services, collaborate, and create functional, usable, user-friendly, as well as sustainable products/services. The vision of the Department of Design at IIT Roorkee is to evolve as a unique entity focusing on design and innovation culture, based on human-environmental engagement in collaborative partnerships with society, industry, and other stakeholders.
The curriculum for the eight-semester B. Des. program is designed with a unique fusion of creative thinking, design methodology, computing, engineering, and manufacturing to create a talent pool which can address industrial challenges and complex societal needs. The program envisages to develop students’ competence in product design, material and manufacturing, ergonomics, user experience design, interaction design, visual design, craft and material exploration as well as sustainability by creative engagement through classroom teaching and hands-on experience. The program's unique feature is an integration of theory components with practical exposure in cutting-edge laboratories.
B.Des. Structure
Importance of the Course within the Department's Academic Portfolio: Department of Design is successfully offering the M. Des (Industrial Design) and PhD programs in the broad areas of design. The first batch of students has already graduated with the alumni making a mark in their chosen fields of interest. In the current scenario, there is an impetus on design thinking and innovation led success stories in Indian industrial landscape. Therefore, after due deliberation and discussion on a wider platform, Department of Design has introduced Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) program to be offered w.e.f. the academic session 2024-2025. The basic objective of the program is to impart design-based education and to create human capital capable of leading not only Indian but global industry towards innovation led success,
How the Course Aligns with Industry Trends and Demands: The competitive business scenario all around the globe is posing imminent challenges for the industry, The competition in terms of quality, performance, cost, durability, safety, sustainability aspects of products and services necessitates a holistic approach of product/service design and development. The fast-changing technological landscape requires professionals who can leverage the benefits of technological advancements to create products/services which are not only functionally efficient but also have a significant societal impact. The objectives of the B. Des program align well with the current requirements of industry where new product/process development is not only a survival strategy but a necessity for a sustained growth trajectory.
Potential Career Opportunities and Outcomes for Students: Design led innovation is a key enabler ensuring success of industries/organizations. The students are expected to lead the industry in the broad spectrum of product design and UX/UI design. The students will explore opportunities of entrepreneurship in terms of design-led start-ups. Interested students can also enrol for higher studies/research programs as one of the career options.
Any Noteworthy Collaborations, Research Initiatives, or Industry Partnerships Associated with the Course: The Government of India launched a major initiative to boost design and innovation activities in the country under the scheme – “National Initiative on Design and Innovation (NIDI)”. Twenty (20) Design Innovation Centers (DICs) were established in the country under the scheme, including one at IIT Roorkee. The DICs have played a significant role in enhancing awareness on innovation and need for design education.
Department of Design, IIT Roorkee and National Institute of Design, Haryana have signed a MoU for academic and research collaboration. The Ministry of MSME has signed a MoU with IIT Roorkee. IIT Roorkee is the Implementing Agency (IA) for the Innovative Design Scheme of the Ministry.
