SUMMARY OF MAJOR SPONSORED RESEARCH SCHEMES AND CONSULTANCY PROJECTS
Anomalous Moisture Transport for Hydrological Extremes in a Changing Climate (AMOTHEC)
Heavy precipitation events (HPEs) occurring over the Indian subcontinent during the summer monsoon (JJAS), Northeast monsoon (OND) or Western disturbances (ONDJFM) in the Iberian Peninsula have been linked historically to significant socio-economic impacts. They are related to floods, landslides that caused human casualties and the loss of property. These extreme events are often associated with specific states of organization of the atmospheric circulation. The identification of these states and their linkage to local extremes is paramount to provide a physically meaningful quantification of extremes in future climates, and to allow forecasting of hydrometeorological extremes, conditioned on the large-scale atmospheric state. Despite the progress in this direction, our knowledge of the anomalous water vapour transport in explaining hydrometeorological extremes accounting climate change risks and effects remains limited. The team of researchers from the Department of Hydrology, IIT Roorkee, and Laboratory Instituto Dom Luis (IDL), Lisbon Portugal will investigate the problem joint for 03 years under the jointly funded AMOTHEC project.
Co-creating Sustainable Agri-water Use in the Hindon Sub Basin - A Multi Scale Participatory Approach
This Indo-Dutch project involves identifying different areas within the Hindon sub basin having pollution load primarily from (1) agricultural activities, (2) domestic effluents, (3) industrial discharges, and (4) mix of the above three. This will enable to have an in depth understanding of the contribution of different sources to river water pollution. We will determine major pollution hotspots or primary pollution sources discharge points into the Hindon and the water quality index (WQI) based on physico-chemical parameters during different seasons for indicating the health of water resource and using it as a yardstick to assess water quality. This will be helpful in determining the spatial and temporal changes in water quality which will be prelude to effective regulation programmes.
Summary Of Major Sponsored Research Schemes And Consultancy Projects
“Development of Spatial Water and Climate Information System for Uttaranchal,”
PI : Dr. N.K. Goel
The objective of the project is to develop tailor-made Water and Climate Information System of Uttaranchal, using GIS tool-kit integrated with object-oriented databases in Visual C++, Visual Basic and Java. The results of temporal and spatial analysis on Meteorological Data to be collected at 100 schools in Uttaranchal under the DST project “Meteorological Data Collection, Monitoring, Processing and Analysis to Evaluate Climate Variability in the State of Uttaranchal ” will be used and integrated in GIS environment in the proposed system. It is also proposed to develop the web-interface for the dissemination of information via Internet using web-GIS technology. The duration of the project is 5 years and total allocation for the project is Rs. 13.68 lakhs.
